Motorcycle Safety Checks – The POWDERS Method
Carmarthen and West Wales Advanced Motorists
At Carmarthen and West Wales Advanced Motorists, we’re passionate about promoting safe, confident riding across our beautiful region – from Carmarthenshire’s rolling hills to Pembrokeshire’s coastal roads. One of the easiest ways to stay safe on two wheels is to make pre-ride checks a daily habit.
The POWDERS checklist is a simple yet essential tool for every rider. It helps ensure your motorcycle is road-ready and mechanically sound before every journey.
What is POWDERS?
POWDERS is a handy acronym that stands for:
Petrol, Oil, Water, Damage, Electrics, Rubber, Steering/Suspension.
Use it before each ride to identify potential issues early and reduce the risk of breakdowns or accidents.
P – Petrol
Check your fuel level before you set off.
Make sure you have enough petrol for your entire route — especially important in rural West Wales, where petrol stations may be sparse.
O – Oil
Check your engine oil level using the sight glass or dipstick.
Top up if needed and inspect for any leaks. Poor oil levels or condition can lead to serious engine damage.
W – Water (Coolant)
If your bike is water-cooled, check the coolant level.
Overheating can damage your engine, particularly on longer or more challenging rides.
D – Damage
Look over your motorcycle for any visible damage.
Check fairings, brake and clutch levers, mirrors, and footrests. Loose or broken parts can cause distractions or failures during a ride.
E – Electrics
Test your lights, indicators, brake lights, and horn.
Make sure everything works correctly — especially important when riding in poor visibility or during early mornings and evenings.
R – Rubber
Inspect tyres for correct pressure, tread depth, and wear.
Look for any cuts, bulges, or foreign objects. Good tyres are essential for traction and stability on wet or uneven Welsh roads.
S – Steering and Suspension
Check that the steering moves freely from side to side.
Listen for any unusual sounds and inspect the suspension for leaks or signs of wear. These components are key to comfort and handling.
Why POWDERS Matters
Riding safely starts before you even turn the key. POWDERS helps you stay in control, reduce the risk of mechanical failure, and ride with greater confidence.
